I´m going to teach you what apples are best for juicing, and how to store them.
The first thing you have to know is that different types of apples give different colors when they are juiced. So if you want a vibrant green juice with yellowish pulp, it will not be the same if the apple is red. There are some colors that produce darker juice and less pulp than others.
Apple juice tastes better when it is consumed right away, there is no way to store it, except in the refrigerator.
So if you have to wait some time before you can drink the juice, better use green apples (Granny Smith or Golden) or red apples (Fuji). They produce the most color and less pulp.
If you want a dark green juice with little pulp, use red apples (Fuji), it will really be green but with slightly brownish color. You can use these types of apples in hot water; they will make a nice green tea.
The best thing to do is to buy organic apples, because pesticides wash out of the juice during the process and end up in your body. So I find it better for health to buy organic. But there is not much to do about it, since most of the apples come from China, which are not organic.
You can also make juice from apples that are not organic. You just need to wash them with water and soap before you put them into the juicer.
I know some people who use a citrus cleaner and then rinse the apples with water before juicing.
Once you have chosen the best apples for juicing, you have to consume them as soon as possible, because they oxidize so fast and lose vitamins that way. I know this is not easy if it´s a big batch of juice.
The best way is to divide the batch into four and freeze three of them. You can have fresh juice every day and then separate the one that you are going to drink that same day into two portions, one for drinking right away and the other one in the fridge.
You can use an ice cream maker to make more apple juice without adding any water, if you want to keep a portion in the fridge for later consumption.
Once you juice has been exposed to air, it will oxidize very fast.
There are two ways to consume apple juice: fresh or with a little fermentation.
The fresh juice keeps all the vitamins and minerals, but can be hard on the digestion.
The fermented juice is easier on the digestion, but loses some of the vitamins and minerals. Most people say that this juice tastes better than the fresh one. (I say it tastes better when it has not been fermented too long.) If you have a lot of apples, you can try both and see what you like best.
If you drink apple juice with a lot of sugar or lemon, the sugar will turn it brownish. (If you drink it without sugar and with lemon, it will not turn brown.)
To make a fresh juice without browning, use oranges instead of apples. I think that they taste better if they are cut into small pieces and if they are not too bitter. And if you live in an area where there is a lot of snow, use sweet oranges instead.
You can keep the fresh juice in the fridge for several days, but you will lose most of the vitamins and minerals. I think that this is not really a good idea if it´s a big batch.
There´s no way to preserve apple juice once you have consumed it, except to put it into an air-tight container with some ice cubes or freeze it. But in this case, you will have to consume half of the juice right away and dedicate the other half to keeping cold.
I have heard about a method of preserving the juice in a solution that keeps it good for several days, but I have not tried it. It consists of adding a tablespoon of salt and two teaspoons of vitamin C per liter of juice. So if you want to try this method, be careful to not add too much salt, because it will increase the taste and make the juice turn brownish.
You can drink the juice home made or with lemon. If it is lemon juice, try to get organic lemons, because you will want to avoid pesticides.
If you are going to drink the juice with lemon, you can use pepitas (paprika seeds) or ginger. You can try adding a little sugar if this kind of juice is too acidic for your taste. Then you will have a nice taste of sweet and sour. If you want it to be really sweeter, use honey instead of sugar.
Apples are better for you if they are fresh and not too acidic. I don´t know if you can use organic apples in a juicer without peeling them, but I think it´s better to peel them or to cut the skin off with a potato peeler, so that the peeling does not end up in the juice.
You can freeze the juice, but it will get brownish after two or three months, because of oxidation.
One more thing: if you make apple juice, do not throw away the peels. If you have a compost, put them there. You can use the peels for making a decoction. I have heard that they taste good in a salad sprinkled with olive oil or used for cooking or anything else you can think of that does not involve putting them into the juicer.
I´m curious about what people will do with dried apples after reading this article...
If you want to find out how to use your juicer, here is a link with some recipes that are worth trying. It also gives you some ideas of what kind of apples are better for which juice. Make up your own recipe based on what you have in your pantry.
The recipe I gave is quite simple, although if you want to make the juice sweeter, add honey instead of sugar and if it´s too sour for your taste, use less lemon.
If you think that you will drink the apple juice without lemon, add a little honey to it. Because with this juice you can drink it quite sweet. If you are going to drink it with honey, add a little more of it to make it sweeter. I think you should try different combinations of honey and fresh apple juice and see what kind of taste you like best.
If you have any questions about the consumption of apple juice, just post them below and I will answer them. I know that this is not an easy topic, but I also believe that it is good to know all we can so we can make good decisions when it comes to our health.
